Untangling the Tangle

With Ronya Banks recorded on July 3, 2022.

The Buddha often described our practice in terms of untangling the tangles we find ourselves caught in. Together, let us uncover the primary tangles we get tangled in and how we can use our Buddhist practices to become free from these tangles.

“A tangle within,
a tangle without,
people are entangled in a tangle.
Gotama, I ask you this: who can untangle this tangle?….”

-Jata Sutta

We’re grateful to have Christine Kupfer guiding our Daily Meditation sessions this week. May they support and enrich your practice.

This week’s theme is: Meditating on the Five Elements : A Journey into Interconnectedness

This week, we explore how the classical elements – earth, water, fire, air and space – invite a meeting between our inner landscape and the living world. Each session offers a meditative gesture of presence, revealing that we are never separate: we are the breath, the body, and earth becoming aware of itself.

This week’s topic is An Enigma Inside A Mystery. We typically freeze in amazement or feverishly search for causes when we suffer dukkha (life’s tension). We’ve probably all experienced how these reactions exacerbate the problem. The Buddha taught that dukkha is a puzzle that can be solved: it doesn’t have to be a mystery. We can learn the resolution that brings us from bewilderment to marvellous release by paying quiet attention to the pattern of the difficulty.

All Worldly Dharma is Buddha Dharma

Nowadays, many Buddhist practitioners have mistaken views. Taking the false to be true, we can make some progress, but not much. This week’s theme is: Awakening Courage: Embracing Being, Belonging, and Becoming

A week of morning meditations to awaken the heart’s quiet, natural courage. Through presence, reflection, and stillness, these sessions invite us to rest in being – gently returning to awareness itself; to open into belonging – feeling our inseparable connection with the web of life; and to trust our becoming – the unfolding of wisdom and love through all that we do.

In the rhythm of being, belonging, and becoming, we are invited to live with authenticity, tenderness, and wholehearted courage.

  • Meditating and speaking: simultaneously practicing Sila, Samadhi and Panna

The communicative loop of listening and speaking forms a powerful karmic workshop. Language taps into our karmic archive, sankhara. It reaches other people and, if they are listening, there is mind-to-mind contact. Relational contact is intrinsically powerful because humans are intrinsically relational: when we engage together, our mutual responsiveness amplifies our efforts. Speaking and listening…
